Well our summer hiatus is over and it's time to get back to club business!
The 22 members present wholeheartedly welcomed back Bob Coluzzi who
is recovering from surgery for a serious stomach ailment. Bob is still on the
mend, but he says he feels good and he thanked everyone for their cards
and calls.
OLD BUSINESS: Both the Treasurer's and Secretary's reports from June
were accepted.
NEW BUSINESS: Bob Coluzzi opened a discussion about increasing the
annual dues by $5.00 to insure there would be sufficient funds in the treasury
to cover expenses. After a brief discussion, a motion to increase the
dues to $25.00 per year was made and approved by the members present.
Another means of raising funds was discussed. A proposal was made to
have an auction of magic items at the November meeting. After a short
discussion it was agreed that the activity for the November meeting would
be a magic auction. Everyone is urged to use this opportunity to bring
items for auction because whatever money is raised will enrich the club
treasury (the club will receive 10% of the auctions proceeds).
New Officers for 2008: The following individuals were nominated for (and
elected by acclamation) the position of:

NEW MAZDA MYSTIC RING MINUTES
NEW MAZDA MYSTIC MAGIC CLUB
MEETING MINUTES OF April 11, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7:30 P.M. by President
Steve Mills. The previous month's Treasurer's and Secretary's reports
were accepted without comment.
President Steve Mills welcomed visitor
Steve Belliveaux, a professional magician to the
meeting. Tonight we welcomed members of SAM #148
for our annual magic exchange. Mazda members will attend the SAM #148 meeting on
4/16]07.
The following SAM #148 members demonstrated various effects. Fr. Kurt Spengler
demonstrated a mentalism effect utilizing Ellery Queen magazines.
Tony Noice demonstrated card effects.
Don Dvorak also did a card demonstration.
Gordon Gluff brought in various wooden apparatus
from his private collection, some of which he demonstrated.
Dave Schleich demonstrated his color changing CD
routine. Finally, your scribe completed the
demonstration with a couple of Charles Gauci effects utilizing magnets.
We thank SAM #148 for a very entertaining and informative evening.
Any Mazda members who would like to attend the SAM #148
next Monday as a demonstrator, let Steve Mills
know. Unfortunately, Joe Vyleta was taken ill near
the end of the demonstrations, by an unknown bug, which was probably the 24 hour
flu as a check the next day found him to be his old self.
See you all in May.
Respectfully submitted,

A proposal was made that we eliminate our annual Christmas party and replace it with a New Year's party to be held after the first of the year (the actual date to be determined). The change will eliminate conflicts with other magic club Christmas parties and making the party more available for some of our members that have a lot of gigs for December. The proposal was approved unanimously by those members present.
On 1/22/07 at 7:00 PM, Canadian magician BILL ABBOTT will lecture to the Conjuror's Corner magic club at the Four Seasons Golf Center (same location we hold our Christmas party}. Admission for Mazda club members is $5.00 with the Mazda club picking up the balance.
Kevin Sarnwick requested permission to read a letter from Pat Cree, who has resigned from the New Mazda Mystic Ring. Permission was granted. The content of the letter basically stated that Pat was resigning from the club because of his opposition to the DVD library which makes available copies of DVDs to the members of The New Mazda Mystic Ring. He believed it to be unethical. The resignation was effective immediately. A discussion of the issue was held. Bob Coluzzi stated he made copies of the DVDs of which he owns and includes them in the DVD library to prevent the originals from being damaged or lost. He reiterated that he receives no compensation for the loaned DVDs and the funds he collects from them is donated directly to club's treasury. After a short discussion, it was determined to continue the DVD library by a yea or nay vote of the members present.
As there was no additional new business, the meeting moved on to the tricks demonstration segment. The following individuals demonstrated effects and illusions:
Doc Morrissey demonstrated a very clever Monte routine.
Don Bothwell did a cheating demonstration with cards and ably demonstrated his ring on a rope effect as well as a demonstration of one handed knot tying in a rope.
Joe Vyleta demonstrated Tim Sonefelt's Metamorphosis utilizing silks in a change tube.
New member Larry Nalley demonstrated a pretty nifty Hopping Halves coin routine.
Kevin Sarnwick demonstrated a mentalist effect, Telepathy. Kevin and Don Bothwell made a list of "thought of items" from the audience and Doc Morrissey revealed the items. Kevin, assisted by Bob Coleman, Don Clancy, and Joe Vyleta, demonstrated Zen's 50 cards across.
Bob Coluzzi demonstrated a very impressive effect called TV Frame. Bob had 2 plates of glass secured together with rubber bands and then covered with a silk. He then had a spectator select card and sign one of the corners, which was then torn off the card. and kept as a receipt. The card was torn into pieces by the spectator and Bob made the pieces vanish. Bob then caused the torn pieces to "fly" across the room to the glass frame. When the silk was removed, the torn card was seen fully restored except for the missing corner. The Card was removed from the glass and the spectator with the torn off corner showed the corner, with the signature did match perfectly.
.Steve Mills demonstrated Prohibition in which he penetrated a bottle cap into a solid glass empty bottle.
Bob Coleman demonstrated some of his great balloon creations.
Fred Dreholb demonstrated the Road Runner/Wily E. Coyote card trick ably assisted by Dagmar Grunwald.
Doc Morrissey brought the evening's festivities to a close with a discussion of some points from Ken Weber's excellent book, Maximum Entertainment.
Your attendance at our meetings ensures our success as a club. See you in February!

Dave Byrne
Secretary

5/11/06
Treasurer's report from Bob Coluzzi was accepted.
All members who attended the recent Bob Sheets and Michael Ammar lectures at Conjuror's Corner reported that both lectures were very informative and enjoyed by all. Bob Coluzzi suggested club logos for tee shirts (3 for $10.00) and the membership present agreed that it was a good idea, more later.
The business was closed and the evening's magic instruction began.
Bob Coluzzi led off with 2 effects, Tattoo Supreme and Tag. In Tattoo Supreme, Bob lost a selected card (jack of diamonds) from the deck. A replica of the J/D was found on Bob's forearm, a unique revelation. In Tag, a card was selected, signed, replaced into the deck. A joker was used as a locator card, Bob punched a hole in the locator card and attached a Tag through the hole in the card and inserted nto the deck; the tag was pulled-out of the deck and it was attached to the selected signed card. An excellent effect. Bob was kind enough to pass out Jack of Diamond tattoos to everyone.
Pat Colcernian performed performed a very good rendition of Swiped. Eliot Lichaa, ably assisted by his son Eric, performed a very entertaining coin matrix utilizing a newspaper, great for impromptu magic. He then performed a math effect in which a cross was formed using 10 cards. Members were challenged to remove one card entirely and move another to a different location and still have a cross when they were done. When the solution was revealed, many of us were embarrassed by it's simplicity.
Don Bothwell performed 3 effects. The first was the Houdini knot in a silk. The second effect involved a silk being "locked" in a glass by covering the glass and securing it with a rubber band, and with a magicmove Don was able to remove the silk, leaving the covering silk and rubber band untouched. His third effect involved having rings jump onto a rope that had been tied to form a circle. Excellent presentations.
Eliot Lichaa spread a pile of cards face down on a table and turned his back. A card was selected and then all the cards were pushed into a pile. When Eliot turned around he was able to find the selected card immediately. Very nice effect.
Doc Morrisey performed 2 effects. In the first, Don Bothwell selected a card. Doc then told an elaborate and entertaining story about making a prediction of what the card would be. At the conclusion, Doc directed everyone's attention to a side table that held a clear plexiglass box that was securely locked by 2 chains. Inside the box, a manilla coin type envelope was held suspended. After the box was opened, and the envelope retrieved, it was opened to reveal the selected card. Very well done. The plexiglass box, base, etc. were all made by Doc with items he had at home. The 2nd effect Doc performed involved counting 6 cards, including the Queen of Diamonds. As he counted and discarded cards to the floor, the count was always 6 and ended with the QD. Doc was able to count and discard cards numerous times until the final count of 6. This highly entertaining effect was accomplished by a very professional use of the "buckle count".
Pat Cree performed a very skillful table penetration after placing a quarter in a glass and forcing it thru the table. Pat also advised members that Joann Fabrics sells a product called "Wooly Nylon" which is a source for very inexpensive invisible thread.
Pete Tappan performed a rubber bands across the fingers effect utilizing colored stretch fabric similar towomen's hair "scrunchies".
Jack Skalon completed the night's demonstration with a nifty card effect. A card (8 of Spades) was selected from a regular deck. Jack then brought out a jumbo playing card to reveal the selection only to show the wrong selection (Jack of Diamonds). He turned the card over to display a large on/off switch and after turning the switch on, he turned the card around again and there was the 8 of Spades!
Those of you who where in attendance will know what a great evening it was. The New Mazda Mystic Ring held the meeting at Marshall Brodien’s home in Geneva. Members where treated to maybe a once in a lifetime experience. Here members where able to check out Mr. Brodien’s Museum which had numerous item from his TV magic Cards and Magic sets etc, items from the Bozo show, the original Wizzo Costume. The Mis-Made Cookie the Clown Illusion, tons of magic posters filled every inch of the walls which I would estimate to be 2000 ft of area space.
Members where also exposed to Marshall’s day’s when he worked the Riverview as a magician and then a barker with Johnny Thompson. He brought back a lot of memories for some of the old timers. He reminisced about all the fun time doing the bozo show and all the inside jokes that went along with the show.
It was one great memorable evening that no one will forget. There were 23 members in attendance and a few of Marshall’s guests which made for a fun evening. Also many members where showing some of their skills of magic as did Kevin Sanwick who always is ready to show something new and something old.
We had a slight meeting to discuss the up and coming Holiday party which will be held again at the
Fore Seasons Golf in Roselle, IL on Thursday December 14, 2006 at 6:00 PM. We had 5 volunteers to take part in the magic show that will be that evening following the food and refreshment. There will be a few children performers so bring the kids. There will be a separate mailing with all the particulars being sent out later this week. We have already had 15 people sign up and pay there $5.00 fee. We urge you all to book your attendance early so we know how many people we have to provide food and refreshments for.

October 13, 2005 Meeting
Lecture by Bobby Schulien
Guest speaker for our October meeting will be Bobby Schulien, son of Chuck Schulien and grandson of legendary restaurant magician Matt Schulien. The Schulien name is well known in the Chicago area. According to Bobby, the Schuliens started in the restaurant business in Chicago in 1881. In the 1920's Matt Schulien met Harry Blackstone and became interested in performing magic. The rest is history.
Schulien's restaurant became famous for providing great food and great close-up magic by Matt Schulien. The restaurant moved to Irving Park Road in 1948 and Matt's son, Chuck, started doing magic there also in the 1950's. Bobby carried on with the family tradition starting in 1974. The restaurant was sold in 1999.
Bobby will talk about remembrances of the magic restaurant. He will talk about learning the basics of card magic including forcing, shuffling, and controlling cards which he learned from his father Chuck. Even though Bobby has been retired for 7 years he will show his chops while explaining Schuliens "Trade Mark Tricks."
Starting off with some color changes of the face card of a deck of cards, show how a selected card shuffled into the deck mysteriously appears in a match book. After a card is selected and lost in the deck, the deck is placed on top of an empty glass tumbler. Upon taping the tumbler, the index of the selected card appeared in the bottom of the tumbler. Finally, a selected card will appear very mysterious. Bobby will talk about his memories of his grandfather and father.
